Finding Your Niche

Finding your niche. What is a niche and where do you find one? A niche is just a market, a market is simply a group of people looking to buy what you have to sell. When you look for a niche you want to pinpoint a very specific group of people, and if you can pinpoint a very specific group of people that do not have to many websites targeting them, then you have found what should be a profitable niche.

Finding your niche is sometimes a complicated process. Right now get out a piece of paper and a pencil, start writing down all the things you can think of that you are passoinate about. The bigger your list the better. Dont ignore something just because you think it will probably not result in a profitable niche, write it all down, fill the paper.

Why a list of things that you are passionate about? Because this will greatly increase your chances of being successful. Building and keeping a profitable website going, will take a lot of effort. You need to be able to devote time and energy, and lets face it, if you dont really care about what your doing it is going to be difficult to devot a lot of time and energy to it.

After you have developed one or two profitable niche websites, you will start looking at all kinds of niches. It wont matter to you if you care about the product or not. But for beginners I recommend finding a niche that you care about, this will help you through the learning curve of building websites and marketing your product.

Look over your list and pick out all the items that you have a lot of knowledge about. Take a moment to think about your hobbies, skills, work experience. Maybe you have passion for something but not a great knowledge in it, thats ok. If you are passionate about something and invest time to it the knowledge will come.

Now look over the items you have on your list, we want to try and narrow down the subjects. Lets say you have golf on your list. Golf is to broad a niche, there are far to many websites built around golf to make it a profitable niche. but there may be some valuable niches in the golf industry we could build a website around. When I google “golf”, I get 411,000,000 websites listed in the search results. But When I google “cavity back irons”, I get 234,000 website returns. 234,000 is still much to large to compete with but you get the idea, we want to drill down into our areas of interest to find a popular but not over populated niche in order that our website will be competitive.

Now that you have a large list of ideas, we want to take them over to discover keywords. Keyword discovery will help us get an idea of whether the niche ideas on our paper have the posssibility to profitable.
